AUTUMN SHOW
The Autumn Show was held last Saturday, September 12th at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close. Numbers of exhibits were a little up on last year, an increase of about 6%. There has also been a significant and welcome increase in visitor numbers for all three shows this year held in the new venue.
As always the flowers in general were a dazzling multi-coloured sight but the dahlias were particularly magnificent and striking. However, it is the vegetables and fruit which provide the stars of the autumn show. Tomatoes and onions were in abundance and the leeks were as long as ever. There was a larger than usual number of entries for the classes based on trays containing a selection of different vegetables. Ken Peck did especially well winning 9 vegetable classes out of 21 possible ones. In one of the pot plant classes, there were several impressive pepper plants grown from a seed.
Cakes, jams and wines were all on display in the domestic sections. There were also craft items of all kinds all executed with great care. 'Harvest Time' was the appropriate theme for the formal flower arrangement. All the entries combined flowers, fruits and vegetables in the displays. First prize went to Yvonne Bishop who also won the class of a flower arrangement in a wine glass which was judged by the public.
Children's classes were well supported. Particularly interesting was the class in which children had made insects using any materials. They had mostly chosen vegetable and plant materials and had come up with a variety of insects including a butterfly, a dragon-fly and a spider.
The Town Mayor, Doug Perry kindly attended to present the prizes. The Chairman, Doreen Townley expressed her thanks to the Town Mayor and to the hard-working Show Secretaries, Yvonne Bishop and Kate Chambers. Thanks too were given to the judges, to show stewards and to all committee members, all of whom had helped to make the show a success. Maureen Lord was also thanked for providing some very welcome refreshments.
Money was raised for society funds thanks to the generosity of
members and visitors. Throughout the show donated plants were on sale
and at the end of the show, plants and vegetables which had been
exhibited in the show were given by members to be sold by auction.
