SPRING DAFFODIL AND FLORAL SHOW

The Spring Daffodil Show was held last Saturday, April 18th at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close. This was a new venue which proved to be very successful. The hall is very light and bright and ideal for displaying plants to their best advantage. It also provided a whole new visitor pattern with people from the immediate locality participating and the show was busy all afternoon.

There was the usual marvellous display of flowers and other produce. Numbers were about the same as last year and the standard of entries was extremely high. The sweep of daffodils which faced visitors as they came through the door was dazzling and most striking of all was the best in show daffodil grown by David Erdman. Daffodils of all kinds are of course the main exhibits but other seasonal garden flowers including tulips and primulas, flowering shrubs and houseplants made up the rest of the plant exhibits. It is difficult to pick out individual exhibits but one which did stand out was a beautiful pink-edged white azelea grown by Ken Peck.

A regular feature of this show is one in which members grow a daffodil bulb using one supplied by the club at one of the autumn meetings and it is nice to see how many members get their bulbs to flower at exactly the right time. This time there were 19 in the adult class and 6 in the the junior class. The winning floral arrangement by Kath Bartram was appropriately called ‘Spring Time' although the weather on the day was more like summer.

In the domestic section, there was the usual display of delicious looking cakes and other food and drink items. A noteworthy winner of first prize for the marmalade class was  the mayoress, Hilary Shibata.

Finally, the junior classes again produced paintings, drawings and some amusingly decorated hard boiled eggs.

We were very pleased to be able to welcome The Town Mayor, Mr Mike Hibbs and the Mayoress Mrs Hilary Shibata to present the prizes. The Chairman, Mrs Doreen Townley expressed her thanks to the Town Mayor and to the hard-working Show Secretaries, Mrs Yvonne Bishop and Mrs Kate Chambers. Maureen Lord was also thanked for providing some very welcome refreshments. Thanks too were given to the judges, to show stewards, and to all committee members, all of whom had helped to make the show such a success. Throughout the show, plants donated by members were sold in aid of society funds.
