SPRING SHOW 2013
Saffron Walden Horticultural Society Spring Show- Daffodil and Floral was held on Saturday April 13th , at the Golden Acre Community Centre, Ross Close. Any fears about the lack of daffodils due to the late arrival of spring were soon allayed as exhibits were set up in the different classes, creating a lovely display for visitors.
Robin Crouchman was awarded the Adams Harrison Cup for most points in the show, the Townley Cup for most points in the daffodil classes, and the Daffodil Society Medal for the best daffodil in the show. This was a narcissus with yellow petals and deeper cup called 'Ombersley'.
The winner of the Ida Hawthorn Vase which is awarded to the grower of the best daffodil supplied by the Society, flowering in a pot as grown, was Ken Peck (Vice Chairman). Other winners in the daffodil and floral classes were David Livermore, Doreen Townley (Chairman), John and Kath Bartram, Storm Bowden, Yvonne Bishop,(who was awarded the Barnard Vase for most points in Flower Section Classes 22-36),Janet Damary, Valerie Vidler, Helen O'Neill and Ruth Coe who also took first prize for her arrangement 'Take a Terracotta Pot' using boughs of blossom and toning tulips in a beautiful shaped pot.
In the domestic classes, Valerie Vidler was the winner of the Mincemeat and Marzipan Tea Breads (made to a given recipe); Helen O'Neill was awarded first prize for both Scotch pancakes and Chelsea buns, and Sarah Stott's sausage rolls took first prize, as did her photograph entitled 'Spring'. The best jar of marmalade was made by Kath Bartram.
In the Junior Classes, Lucy Henderson's pretty basket of spring flowers won her first prize, and the Rickett Shield for Best Exhibit in the Junior Classes. Her Sugar Mouse also won first prize. Ben Harris won the Townley Cup for his daffodil arrangement, and first prize for his vegetable boat, while Sam Harris won first prize for his drawing of a rabbit. Danielle Kidd's photograph 'My Big Adventure' got first prize and also her decorated Hard Boiled Egg. Well done to all of you.
The Chairman, Mrs Doreen Townley, thanked the Town Mayor, Cllr David Watson, and the Mayoress, who presented the trophies. She also thanked Yvonne Bishop and Kate Chambers (Joint Show Secretaries). Grateful thanks to Ridgeons, Tesco and Waitrose for their generous donations of raffle prizes for our 2013 Horticultural Shows.
The next Show will be the Rose Show, which will take place on June 15th, at the Golden Acre Community Centre, doors open 2pm.
